Richard Clarke

Richard Clarke (1668-1723)
The son of John Clarke of Downton and his wife Elizabeth Wilding. He was admitted a Burgess of Shrewsbury with his father (when 5 years old) and then sworn a Burgess in 1721.

A yeoman, he married Martha Gravenor at St. Alkmund’s in Shrewsbury in 1693. They had six children:

  • William (1695-1771)
  • Martha (1698-1781)
  • Richard (1700-bef 1704)
  • Elizabeth (1702)
  • Richard (abt 1704-1766)
  • John (1707)

Richard was buried in 1723.

Their son William became the Rev. William Clarke. He married Ann Wotton and their line continues to the present day.

Their daughter Elizabeth married the Rev. Adam Newling and their line continues to the present day.

Their son Richard married Mary Davies and their line continues to the present day. Richard is shown for several years as a juror on the Court Leet Jury in Upton Magna, 1741 and then 1743-1746, 1750-53 and finally in 1755.

Presumably therefore he had a similar standing to his father in the village.
