The Newns or Newnes Family
Originally from Worthenbury in Shropshire right on the Welsh/English border.

Joseph Newns
Our eldest ancestor in this line is Joseph Newns who married Eleanor at Prees, Shropshire, in 1717. Joseph & Eleanor had three children, Thomas (about 1718), Joseph (1730) & Elizabeth (before 1746). The dates span a wide range and may be difficult to believe but the children are all mentioned in Joseph’s will dated 1764.

Thomas Newns of the Sarn (1) (1718-1815)
Thomas was born in Worthenbury the son of Joseph Newns & Eleanor. The Newns of this line are frequently referred to as “Of the Sarn”, the Sarn being a place about a mile outside Worthenbury. We think that this is to differentiate them as a family from the Newns that were resident in the village of Worthenbury. Thomas of the Sarn married Mary and they had several children

Eleanor 1744, Mary 1759, John 1763, Audrey 1766, Audrey 1768, Phoebe 1770, Phoebe 1771, Elenor 1774 and Thomas 1777 all baptised in Worthenbury

Thomas of the Sarn lived to a great age and according to the parish registers was buried in Worthenbury in 1815 aged 97.

Thomas Newns of the Sarn (2) (1777-1857)
Thomas of the Sarn (2) was baptised in Worthenbury the son of Thomas of the Sarn (1) and Mary. Thomas (2) married Sarah Phillips in Ellesmere in 1799. They had two children John (1801) and Joseph (1803).

John Newns of the Sarn (1801-1861)
John was the one baptised at the Sarn the son of Thomas Newns (2) and Sarah. John married Mary Furnival at Malpas, Cheshire, in 1819. They had seven children, Thomas (1820), Sarah (1822), Mary (1824), Ann (1826), John (1829), Joseph (1831) and William (1835).

Joseph Newns alias Newnes
Joseph was baptised in Worthenbury, Flintshire, in 1831 the son of John Newns and Mary. Joseph married Ann Jones in Ellesmere in 1854, Ann was from nearby Loppington. Joseph & Ann had five children, John Jones (1855), Mary Ann (1856), Joseph John (1859), Emily (1861) and Richard (1867). For some years the family lived at Calverhall but by 1881 Joseph was at Llangollen. Unfortunately we have not identified his burial yet.

John Newns (1829-1909)
Joseph’s brother John married Harriet Wilkinson in 1854 at Walton-on-the-Hill in Liverpool.

They had nine children including Theophilus Newns (1855-1937) and Joseph Robert Newns (1872-1947).
