The eldest ancestor we have in this line is William Hand and the story starts with him here:

William Hand (junior) The eldest son of William Hand and Johane born in born in Dalwood in about 1566. He married Alice Stocker there in 1593.
Thomas Hand The eldest son of William Hande (junior) and Alice born in Dalwood in about 1593. He married Dorathe Purchasse in Dalwood in 1615 and died there many years later in about 1667.
John Hanne (senior) The second son of Thomas Hand and Dorathe born in Dalwood, Devon, in about 1620. He married Mary Newbery in Stockland, Devon, in 1648, and died in Dalwood in about 1693.

He married twice, first to Mary Fowler in Stoke Abbott in 1768 (no issue that I know) and secondly to Mary Chard in Beaminster in 1776. He died and was buried in Beaminster shortly afterwards in 1783 leaving his wife to bring up the family alone.
