Gee Family of Chipping Norton

The Gee Family
Probably not ultimately from Chipping Norton the Gee family have nonetheless lived there for many many years. The Gee family, at least in the nineteenth century were weavers. Our eldest ancestor in this line is Ambrose Gee and the story starts here with him.

Ambrose Gee
Ambrose was born around 1692 but his baptism is not listed in Chipping Norton, where did he come from? He married Mary Ekley in Chipping Norton in 1717, they had five children.

    • Mary 1718
    • Richard 1720
    • Bety 1723
    • Catherine 1725
    • Anne 1727

Mary Ekley's origins have not  been investigated yet

Richard Gee
Richard Gee was baptised in Chipping Norton in 1720 the son of Ambrose Gee and Mary. Richard Gee married Rosamund Widows in Sarsden, Oxon., in 1742, they had eight children. In fact Richard married again after the death of Rosamund in childbirth to Jane Bond by whom he had another three children.

      • Sarah 1743
      • William 1744
      • Rosamund 1746
      • Sarah 1748
      • Thomas 1749
      • Catherine 1752
      • Richard Widdows 1754
      • Elizabeth 1755

Rosamund Widdows had been born in Churchill

Thomas Gee
Thomas Gee was baptised in Chipping Norton in 1749 the son of Richard Gee and Rosamund. He and Mary Gee were married in Chipping Norton in 1773. They had just two children.

      • Richard 1773
      • Thomas 1778

Mary Gee was from Long Compton in Warwickshire and apparently her maiden name was also Gee.

Thomas Gee married Elizabeth Harvey in Chipping Norton in 1799. They had many children including Caleb Gee (alias Jee) who married and still has living descendants today.

Richard Gee
Was Richard Gee baptised in Chipping Norton in 1770 the son of Thomas Gee & Mary or perhaps he was the son of William & Ann Gee? These two Richard Gees were married on the same day in 1794 in Chipping Norton, one was born in Chipping Norton in 1770 and the other in 1773, but which is which?

I pondered this for some time. The answer came through the mail! A letter received from Hazel Brown shows with the aid of some wills I hadn't seen before who is who. In fact my Richard Gee is the son of Thomas & Sarah Gee.

Richard Gee & Sarah Wiggins were married in Chipping Norton in 1794,    they had six children.

      • William 1794
      • Anne 1796
      • Thomas 1798
      • William 1801
      • John 1802
      • James 1806
      • Elizabeth 1809

Sarah Wiggins was baptised in Chipping Norton in 1767, the daughter of Edward & Bridget. Edward Wiggins married Bridget Day in Chipping Norton in 1755. I have not located Edward Wiggins origins but Bridget was baptised in Chipping Norton in 1732, the daughter of James and Bridget. James Day married Bridget Jones in Chipping Norton in 1728.

Elizabeth Gee (1809) married into the Cripps family. They had children in the town before migrating to South Wales.

Living descendants have been discovered in this line who would be distant cousins.

See Isabel Cripps’ web site.

John Gee
John Gee was baptised in Chipping Norton in 1802, the son of Richard Gee & Sarah. He & Mary Gilkes married in Chipping Norton in 1823, they had four children. John Gee was a weaver.

    • Mary 1824
    • Richard 1826
    • Mary 1828
    • Dinah 1830

The origins of Mary Gilkes are currently unknown, but appear to be outside Chipping Norton

Mary Gee
Mary was born in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, in 1828 the daughter of John Gee & Mary.

My great-great grandmother, she seems to have travelled to Birmingham with several of the Stanleys boys and married one of them, Samuel Stanley, when they arrived in Handsworth in 1848.

It must have been quite a journey in those days.
