Cook (Worcestershire)

Cook Family
Not related to my other Cook ancestors these Cooks came from Worcester.

Samuel Cook
My oldest ancestor in this line. At this time we know little about him other than what we’ve discovered from the marriage certificate of his son. It seems that Samuel was a haulier and was probably born in the Worcester area sometime before 1810.

Edwin Cook
The son of Samuel, born in Worcester and baptised in St. Martins church in 1828, his mother is not mentioned in the records. At various time he was a haulier, a fireman, a porter and a foreman at the hop merchants. In 1849 he married Sarah Mills at Claines and they had many children in the town. In 1863 he is listed as part of the Angel St. Congregational Church.

Ellen Cook
The daughter of Edwin Cook, she was born in Worcester around 1854, but her precise birthdate & place is yet to be identified. She was a machinist and in 1872 married Thomas Edgington at the Angel St. Congregational Church. They had 5 children born in Worcester and then another 3 born in Birmingham.

For more information on this line please refer to the Edgington page.

John Samuel Cook
Ellen’s brother, born in Worcester in 1856. He was already a master printer before he joined the City Council in 1889. In 1898 he was elected Chamberlain & Chairman of the General Purposes Committee (only resigned this in 1926). In 1899 he was Grandmaster of the District (Oddfellows). He was a prominent Liberal and associated with the Angel St. Church all his life. In 1900 he was Justice of the Peace for the City and in 1902-03 he was High Sheriff. In 1904 he became Mayor of Worcester and was made a Freeman of the city in 1914. The family always knew him as “Alderman Cook”.

He took a keen interest in the works of Friendly Societies and was also Vice President of the Worcester Rowing Club. He died in 1927 and was buried in Angel St. Church, by all accounts a prestidious funeral with many notaries in attendance.
