Old Bones

Looking for your old bones on the internet? You’ve come to the right place.

The Bone Family
The distinguishing aspect of the Bone family was that they were baptists. Originally in Hampshire they took their religion on to Reading, Berks., where they helped to found a new Baptist Church in the town. Finally they moved on to Coventry and took their Baptist faith with them to their new home. Our eldest ancestor is Richard Bone and the story starts here with him.

Richard Bone of Alton, Hants.
According to census returns Richard Bone was born in Alton, Hants. The first time we come across him is at his marriage in Reading, Berks., in 1808 to Leni Young. They had five children all born in Reading until Leni died after childbirth in 1825. The following year Richard re-married in Reading to Mary Allen of Coventry. The couple had two children born in the town. Richard is shown as a member of the Baptist church in Reading from 1820 onwards. In 1837 he and his second wife Mary were dismissioned from the Reading church and received into the Baptist church in Coventry.

This branch of the Bone family were all weavers as far as I can tell.

Children by Leni Young:
| Sarah, 1813 | George, 1815 | Richard 1816 | Esther 1823 | Richard 1825 |
Children by Mary Allen:
| Fanny 1829 | Emma 1833 |

George Bone of Reading, Berks.
George Bone was born in Reading in 1815, son of Richard & Leni Bone. He would have moved with his parents to Coventry around 1837 when he was aged about 22. He & Ann Isabella Bentley were married in Coventry in 1842, they had eight children.

Children:
| Ann, 1843 | George, 1847 | Sarah, 1847 | Harry, 1850 | John, 1854 | John, 1858 | Richard, 1858 |
George's wife, Ann Isabella Bentley, had been baptised at the Zion Independent Church in Nuneaton in 1818, the daughter of George & Ann Bentley.

Ann Maria Bone of Foleshill, Warwicks.
Originally baptised in Coventry in 1843 the daughter of George Bone and Ann. She was brought up in Foleshill and by the time of the 1861 census she was a ribbon weaver.

Ann Maria Pegg (nee Bone), circa 1915

My great-great grandparents William Pegg and Ann Maria Bone were married in Foleshill, Coventry, Warwickshire in 1863. The family moved to nearby Bedworth but by 1881 they were in Birmingham.

We understand that she died in Birmingham around 1917.
